On Monday, April 15, 2019, Reverend Willie James Toomer slept into eternal rest at the resident after a lengthy illness. He was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, on April 29, 1926, the son of the late Sherman Toomer and the late Sallie Moorehead Toomer Russell. He was married to the late Adeline Inge Toomer, who died February 8, 2000. From that union three children were born: Angela (Deceased), Wayne and Larry.

Rev. Toomer was educated in the Danville Public Schools and was a graduate of John Mercer Langston High School in 1944. He was a graduate of North Carolina A & T State University in Greensboro, N.C. in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Rev. Toomer was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II.

Since the age of 12, after the death of his father, to defray the cost of college, Rev. Toomer worked part-time at Schoolfield Lunch. Schoolfield Lunch and all of its employees became an integral part of his life until its closing in 2009. After college, Rev. Toomer was employed as a social studies teacher and later as a school counselor in Pittsylvania County Public Schools from 1958-1988.

For 42 years, (1955-1997), Rev. Toomer served as the pastor of Camp Grove Baptist Church. He served as Pastor Emeritus until his death. Rev. Toomer was active in the ministry. He served as President of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia from June 1981-June 1983. In addition, he served as Moderator and Vice-Moderator of the Cherrystone Missionary Baptist Association, Board of Trustees for Virginia Union University School of Theology, and Board of Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Missions Convention. He was a lifetime member of the NAACP and the Danville Royal Lodge #104.

Rev. Toomer was preceded by his parents; father-and mother-in-law, Moses and Mary Noble Inge; his only sister, Irma Toomer Bennett; his only daughter, Norma Angela Toomer Wilson; one aunt, Verna Toomer; four uncles, Earl Toomer (Alice), Harvey Toomer (Ethel), Walter Toomer (Annie Mae), and Algie Toomer (Jean); six brothers-in-law, Thomas Inge, Isaac Bennett, Charles Logan, Leroy Coleman, Sr., Claude Totten, Sr., and Willie Kernodle; six sisters-in-law, Alease Inge Kernolde, Effie Mae Coleman Clark, Iola Inge Logan, Madie Inge Totten, Jerene Inge Hairston Hines, and Annie Inge; three nieces, Valerie Bennett, Delbra Totten Erby, and Yvonne Coleman Akins; and two nephews, Tony Hairston and Anthony Inge, and three additional nephews who he fondly thought of as his sons, Leroy “Mickey” Coleman, Jr., Lawrence “Pee-Wee” Coleman, and Fredrick “Fred” Coleman.

Rev. Toomer leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Willie “Wayne” Toomer (Venessa Witcher) and Larry D. Toomer (Nicole White), both of Danville, Virginia; two aunts, Jean Toomer of Danville, Virginia and Elizabeth Morehead Jumper of Eden, North Carolina; one brother-in-law, James “Sonny Boy” Hairston; five nephews, Isaac “Michael” Bennett, Ray Inge, Claude Totten, Jr., Marshall “Jerome” Hairston, and Rontae Kernodle, Sr., all of Danville, Virginia; four nieces, Ann Bennett Mayo, Sandra Bennett Conway, Glenda Bennett Motley, and Sherri Kernodle Greene, all of Danville, Virginia; five grandchildren, Michael Ingram, Avis Toomer Rodgers, Adrienne Toomer, Asia Toomer and Wesley Toomer, all of Danville, Virginia; and two great grandchildren, Gakiya Toomer, Gakoria Robertson; and a host of other relatives and dear friends.

A visitation will be held on Friday, April 19, 2019 at Norris Funeral Home, West End Chapel, 511 Church Avenue Chapel from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m., and at other times at resident of Larry and Nicole Toomer, 1201 Rosemary Lane (Westover). The funeral service will be at the Bellevue Baptist Church, 854 Luna Lake Road, Danville, Virginia, on Saturday, April 20, 2019, at 11 a.m., and with the Reverend Dr. Raymond Ramsey and the Rev. Dr. James Pettus officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Cemetery.
