Obituary for Stephen Bradley Shay

Stephen Bradley Shay, 60, of Chatham, VA passed away Sunday May 12, 2019 in his home after a brief illness. Steve was born in Corning, NY on September 5, 1958 to G. Clinton and Lucille N Shay. Steve attended school in Corning as well as the Choate School in Connecticut and Northeastern University in Boston.

Steve began his career with Corning Glass in 1979 in Danville, VA. as a Glass Forming Process Technician. While Steve was a second-generation Corning innovator, he formed and drew his own path as an expert in various sheet glass forming and tubing processes. Steve made contributions to many Corning products enabling world changing innovations, specifically in development of sheet glass for LCD displays, his leadership in Corning’s success with Gorilla Glass cover glass for the smartphone industry and was a key member of the team developing the current Vulcan pharmaceutical glass innovation. After the Danville plant closed, Steve was hired back as a consultant and traveled between Corning plants in Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania and France sharing his expertise.

Steve was a builder of adventure, skill and wisdom. After buying 50 acres of undeveloped land in Chatham in 1979, Steve designed and built his own house. His innate eye for design can be seen in the chicken coop as well as the elaborate hot tub house he built on his property. With avid determination he tackled tasks and solved problems. He was a motorhome enthusiast whose Virginia Tech tailgate parties and Jimmy Buffett Parrothead concerts are remembered by many. His annual Christmas pilgrimage with his daughter to Disney World was a highlight of both their lives. Steve always loved sailing and had a sailboat on Smith Mountain Lake for several years and was focusing on his dream to sail to the Bahamas and beyond.

Steve was a loving father, son, brother and uncle. He is survived by his daughter, Taylor Mackenzie Shay of Orlando, FL; his father, G.Clinton Shay of Hardy, VA; his sister, Lucinda Shay Justice of Lake Arrowhead, CA, Taylor’s mother April Shay of Danville, VA; five nephews, Jeff Marshall of Milford, NH; Eric Merola of Santa Monica, CA; Peter Merola of Culver City, CA; Patrick Downey of Dedham, MA and Michael Shay of Winston-Salem, NC. He had four great nieces and nephews who called him Great Uncle Steve. He was predeceased by his mother, Lucille Shay Wheeler, his sister Deborah Shay Downey, his brother Robert Clinton Shay and nephew Thomas Michael Downey.

Steve will be remembered for his quick wit and devilish sense of humor and will be sorely missed by all, including his 12 spoiled hens and 2 cats

The family will be holding a private service. A memorial celebrating Steve’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation is encouraged to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. (
