Obituary for Sherman Overton Cumbo

Sherman Overton Cumbo, age 91, beloved father and Paw-Paw of Danville, went home peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on date, 09/21/2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Washington County, Abington, Virginia on November 21, 1926, the son of William Melton Cumbo and Emma Davis Cumbo. He was married to the love of his life, Helen Wright Cumbo on June 20, 1953, who preceded him in death on October 23, 2008.

He joined the U. S. Army in February 1945 and served 18 months overseas in Japan. He then enlisted in the U. S. Air Force in February 1952 and stationed in Washington, DC. He served as a Sergeant (E-5) and during this time has a special mission of working on President Truman’s aircraft, Douglas VC-54C “Sacred Cow”. Also while in Air Force attending several schools in Cheyenne, Wyoming and Great Lakes, Illinois to complete his mechanical classification as Mechanic and Automatic Transmissions. Later he was stationed at Orlando Air Force Base in Orlando Florida. Returning to Danville in 1962, he was employed as a auto mechanic at Swanson Motors for many years and later employed at Tamson Chevrolet, which became Woodall Chevrolet until his retirement in 1988.

He was born again on April 4, 1959 at about 9:00 on a Saturday night. This is when he became a Christian. He lived the next 59 years serving the Lord with gladness. In 1972 he had the privilege of going to Jamaica twice on missionary trips. He pastored at Pleasant Valley Church of the Living God in Axton Virginia for several years. He then became member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church, which is now White Oak Worship Center in Blairs, VA, where he taught Adult Sunday School for many years. He also played electric guitar in the church band. He loved to sing and praise the Lord. He taught his daughters all about the Lord and they sang with him in church from the time they were small until adults, known as Sherman and the girls. He cherished and read God’s word and could quote many scriptures. He was a past member of the Gem Seniors at White Oak.

He is survived by five daughters, Nancy Bruce of Danville, Susan Shelton and husband Kent, of Keeling, Jane Prior and husband Terry, of Danville, Carol Kennedy and husband Ricky, of Gretna, Tammy Moorefield of Danville. Grandchildren, Laura Powell and husband Jeremy, of San Diego, CA, Sara Lankford and husband Ryan, of Danville, Joshua Moorefield, Moran Kerns, Tyler Kerns of Danville. Great-Grandchildren are Leah Powell, Meredith Powell, Hannah Powell and Jackson Moorefield, also one brother, Horace Cumbo of Alexandria, VA.

In addition to his precious wife and his parents, he was predeceased by five brothers, Ernest Cumbo, Garnett Cumbo, Carl Cumbo, Fred Cumbo and James (Jay) Cumbo and six sisters, Hazel Hedrick, Myrtle Thomas, Vernie Thomas, Pauline Groceclose, Geneva Cumbo and Ann Ewing. Also one great granddaughter, Elizabeth Powell, and son-in-law, Michael Bruce .

A special thank you for all the love and care over the years from his care givers, Laura Powell, Sara Lankford, Tammy Moorefield, Joshua Moorefield and Mary Ann Walker.

Funeral Services celebrating his life will be held, Monday, September 24, 2018 at 2 pm at White Oak Worship Center in Blairs, VA with the Rev. Roger Ewing officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors to be rendered by the US Air Force and American Legion Dan River Post 1097.

The family suggests memorial tributes to the Building Fund at White Oak Worship Center, 8465 U S Highway 29, Box 337, Blairs, VA 24527-0337.

The family will receive friends at White Oak Worship Center on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at 5 pm – 7pm. At other times, the family will be at the residence at 825 Stokesland Avenue Ext.
