Obituary for Ralph Louis Judson

Ralph Louis Judson of King’s Grant in Martinsville, VA died on June 14, 2019. He was born in Galesburg, Illinois on June 27, 1929 to the late Ralph M. Judson and Hortense (Ernst) Judson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara in California.

He is survived by his wife Kathryn (Myers), his son David and daughter-in-law, Jane; and two grandsons, Brian (Lauren) and Scott. He also had two beloved great-grandsons, Colby and Lincoln Judson.

He graduated from Galesburg High School (Illinois) in 1947. While attending, he was President of the FFA and was inducted into the National Honor Society. In February 1951, he entered the service during the Korean War. As a Corporal, he was discharged in January 1953. Kathryn and Louis were married June 17, 1951.

Louis received a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois in 1956. He was a Deacon and Elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Joliet, Illinois. He and Kathryn moved to Martinsville, Virginia in January 1993 and joined the First Presbyterian Church here in 1993. He co-led a Sunday Morning Bible Study for adults in both Joliet and Martinsville. He produced wood crafts for their Advent Craft Workshops for several years.

He was active in the community volunteering for many activities including, the area Master Gardeners, 4-H, The Virginia Museum of Natural History and various committees at King’s Grant – a retirement community. He set up and gave a series of workshops for the “Grounds Crew” at King’s Grant. He held the Presidency of the Master Gardeners for 2 terms, was editor of their Master Gardeners Newsletter as well as coordinating many other of their activities. He was an instructor at Joliet Jr. College for 20 years retiring as “Professor Emeritus.” He also worked as an Agronomist for Knox County Oil Co. in Illinois for 10 years, a member of ARCPACs (American Registry of Certified Professional Agronomists in Crops and Soils), State President of the IACCAI (Illinois Association of Community College of Agricultural Instructors) and on the Advisory Committee of Illinois Soil Testers.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 24, 2019 at King’s Grant Victory Chapel with Chaplain Paul Johnson officiating.
