Obituary for Nathan Ernest Galbreath

Nathan Ernest Galbreath, age 87, claimed the promise of the Resurrection on December 14, 2018, at Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem, Virginia. Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 21, 6-8 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville Chapel. The funeral service will be held Sat., Dec. 22, at 11 a.m. at Norris with Pastor Warren Carswell of Southview United Methodist Church of Roanoke officiating. Burial will follow the service at Mountain View Cemetery, Ridgeway, Virginia.

He was born May 3, 1931, in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, to James Ernest Galbreath and Leona Hitt Galbreath. His mother passed in 1941, and Lillian Duncan Galbreath became his stepmother in 1943. He was a 1949 graduate of Goodlettsville High School, where he was class Salutatorian and a two-sport athlete. After graduating from the University of Tennessee in 1953, he served two years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Thule, Greenland. He met Jean Williams while stationed at Fort Eustis in Newport News, Virginia. They married in 1955, raising four children. Nathan had a distinguished career with DuPont as a computer systems analyst, retiring in 1991. He was a long-term member of First United Methodist Church of Martinsville, serving as Superintendent of Sunday Schools for a number of years. He served with the Boy Scouts of America for over 25 years as a Scoutmaster, earning the distinguished Silver Beaver award in 1997. He also enjoyed assisting the local 4-H Club in Martinsville as an adult leader at the 4-H Camp at Smith Mountain Lake.

Nathan was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother and by his beloved wife, Jean Williams Galbreath; and brother, Larry Galbreath. He is survived by his children, Karen G. Lavinder (Barry) of Roanoke, Laura G. Delgadillo (José) of Charlotte, NC, Scott Galbreath (Kathy) of Duluth, GA, and James “Rusty” Galbreath (Lara) of Salem. He is also survived by a brother, Jerry Galbreath of Goodlettsville, Tennessee; and step-sister, Doris Jean Schonhoff of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Nathan has 10 grandchildren.
