Obituary for Howard Jackson "Jack" Strader

Howard Jackson Strader, (Jack), 88, of Danville, Virginia, passed away at home on September 18, 2018. He had been surrounded by family over the last several days and his wife, Patricia, who would not leave his side.

Jack was born in Greensboro, NC on April, 7th 1930. Later he moved to Wilkes County, NC as his parents opened up Strader’s Hardware. He graduated from North Wilkesboro High School and continued on to receive a Bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University.

Jack entered the United States Air Force and became a Staff Sergeant. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Occupation Medal Germany.
Jack married Patricia Strader on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 1967; they were married 50 years. Once on their anniversary, their sons had them renew their vows in the hallway of the house, and rice is still being found to this day.

Jack came to Danville in the early 60’s at the request of his uncle, Richard Quate, to work at Southside Manufacturing, where he eventually became vice president and worked there until retirement. Jack enjoyed playing golf at Tuscarora Golf Club, with (too many to mention) his golfing buddies. In his younger years, he was also actively involved in Main Street United Methodist Church, serving on the board multiple years. Jack was also a part of the Pittsylvania County Chamber and served on the golf committee.

Jack took pride in having a nice lawn and would spend hours making sure it was well taken care of and had his sons and grandchildren help in the process. Another joy in his life was traveling with his wife. They enjoyed the beach and other adventures.

Jack is survived by his wife Patricia, his three sons, Kelly (Hal), Scott (Lisa), Andy (Jennifer), and eight grandchildren, Sam, Eleanor, Joey, Johnny, Josh, Bethany, Allie and Andrew.

Jack is preceded in death by his mother and father, Margaret and Howard Strader and brother Jerry Strader.

The memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, September 22, 2018, at Norris Mt. Hermon Chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to God’s Pit Crew or Blairs Fire Department.
