Obituary for Gladys Mae Burnett Stone

Gladys Burnett Stone was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, December 27, 2018. She was born Nov. 6, 1921, in Pittsylvania Co., Va., daughter of the late Lester and Nora Roland Burnett. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Stone in 1984.

She was also predeceased by her brothers, Kenneth Burnett, Benjamin Burnett, Edmond Burnett, and her sister, Odelle Burnett, all of Gretna, Va.

The loss of her only granddaughter, Tonya Kay Stone in 2010, was profound for Gladys and the Burnett-Stone family, when Tonya died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 45. Along with Tonya’s father, Roger Stone, Gladys was instrumental in Tonya’s upbringing and success, and remained close to her until her death.

Gladys’ survivors are one son, Roger Stone of Danville, Va.; and one daughter, Shirley Stone Wyrick and her husband, Lynn Wyrick of Greensboro, N.C.

Grandchildren are David Wyrick and his wife, Cheryl and their children, Katherine, Caroline, and Elizabeth Wyrick, all of Greensboro, N.C., and Jason Wyrick and his wife, Carla and their children, Madison and Jacob Wyrick, all of Raleigh, N.C. Gladys is further survived by her two sisters-in-law, Annie B. Burnett and Juanita Burnett of Gretna. Gladys was the last member of her immediate Burnett family.

A graduate of Gretna High School, Class of 1940, Gladys presented the class history at graduation. She moved to Danville in 1946 and retired from Dan River, Inc. over 40 years later. She continued to participate in Continuing Education after retirement and was employed by God’s Storehouse for 19 more years, where she was a well-known and beloved employee and servant to the community.

Saved in a Oral Roberts Crusade, Gladys was a member of River Oak Church of God, and in her latter years, she attended Central Blvd. Church of God; she was active in both churches. Children especially loved her as a Sunday School teacher.

Gladys will be remembered as a steadfast founder and member of the Upper Room Prayer Ladies, a prayer group started by her and other praying Christian Ladies in the 1980s, that continues today.

An inspirational visit to Israel with a Christian friend in 1995 reaffirmed her unwavering dedication to God and strengthened her commitment to Jesus Christ. She took joy in proclaiming Jesus as Lord.

Gladys was truly a woman of God who exhibited compassion for others in a Christ-like spirit, believing fully in no compromises for Christianity. She held close to her heart that there is a time to be born and a time to die, and she rejoiced in God’s promises to us.

Her life is a testimony through Jesus of her unwavering faith in God. Loyal to the end, she has continued to influence others with her dedication and voice for Jesus. Her kind spirit has been a source of peaceful encouragement for souls hungry for our blessed Lord and Savior. Her daily life has given proof of her mission for serving Him.

God’s promises have been kept; Gladys Stone’s life is an inspiration to all who knew her, and to those who prayed with her. Amen.
