Obituary for George Bunch Adams, Jr.

George Bunch Adams, Jr., 89, of Martinsville, VA passed away at home on June 3, 2019. He was born on May 10, 1930 in Emory, GA to the late George B. Adams, MD and Virginia Surtees Adams.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Jean S. Adams and his brother James S. Adams.
Mr. Adams received his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Cincinnati in Civil Engineering. He served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers from 1955-1957. He became a licensed professional engineer in both Tennessee and Virginia. He was employed by E.I. DuPont Co. for 32 years where he rose to the level of supervisor for Safety, Health and Environmental Control. Upon retirement he expanded his lifelong hobby by starting a business for stamp collectors called ERO Stamps.
George and Jean were married in 1955 and moved to Martinsville in 1965. He was a member of the Lions Club. He was also involved in the Kiwanis Club, becoming president of the local chapter in 1977-78. Extremely active in the Boy Scouts of America, he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to youth.
He joined Jean in stalwart support of the Virginia Museum of Natural History. Most recently he helped fund the construction of the Jean S. Adams Education Pavilion which broke ground on June 11th.
He was active in public service as a member of the West Piedmont Planning District commissions and the 1981 Martinsville-Henry County Merger Study Committee. He was elected to the Martinsville City Council, serving from 1990 to 1998. He was vice mayor from 1992 to 1994 and mayor from 1994 to1998.
Mr. Adams is survived by his children George B. Adams III (wife Leah Jamieson); Carol J. Adams, M.D.; and Sarah Hammack (husband Matthew); and three grandchildren, Caitlin Adams, Stephen Hammack and Brian Hammack (wife Brooke).
A celebration of his life will be held at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church on July 13th at 2 pm with reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Museum of Natural History Foundation, 21 Starling Ave, Martinsville, VA 24112 or to Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, 725 Beechnut Lane, Martinsville, VA 24112 (where he was a member and former Deacon, Elder and Trustee).
