Obituary for Gary Lee Kendrick

Gary Lee Kendrick of Chatham, VA passed away Friday morning in his home, after a three-year battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Obie Kendrick and the surviving Jeanette Kendrick, of Danville, VA. He leaves behind his loving wife, Sherry McCoy Kendrick and their four children; Stuart, Benjamin & wife Skyler, Mari-Tate & fiancé Austin, Zachary & wife Brandie. He leaves behind four grandchildren; Sienna, Sophie, Leah-Grace, and Juna who were the joy of his later years. In addition, he is survived by his brothers, Mark Kendrick & wife Donna, and Larry Kendrick, also his sister-in-law, Julie Oakes & husband Darrel. He is survived by two uncles, David Anderson & wife Patricia, and Marion Anderson. He had five nieces and nephews; Jessica, Brandon, Nathan, Josh and Meagan.

Known affectionately as “Pops,” Gary worked hard his whole life providing for his family, but his legacy comes from the countless hours spent with them. Rarely taking time for himself, he actively participated in the homeschooling of his children, the coaching of their ball teams, taking care of their horses and teaching them his character. In addition to the love he held so dear for his family, Gary also dedicated his life helping others, being a compassionate respiratory therapist.

Gary and Sherry also had many other “children” that always found an open door, open hearts and full plates in the Kendrick home.

For all the love Gary lived, the largest part was reserved for his wife, for whom he spent his last four words, “Sherry, I love you.”

A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 27th at 5:00 PM at Norris Funeral Services’ Mt Hermon Chapel, 3995 Franklin Tpke with Dr. Tedd Manning officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 4:30 - 5:00. Family and Friends will also celebrate his life on Sunday, November 17th at his home. Details TBA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mountain Valley Hospice of Martinsville, VA or Crosspoint Assembly of God of Danville, VA.
