Obituary for Catherine Elaine Hurd Button

Catherine Elaine Hurd Button completed her earthly journey on February 18, 2019 after a strong and courageous two year battle with pancreatic cancer. She began this journey on June 2, 1942 as the daughter of Benjamin Justus Hurd and Virginia Mitchell Hurd.

She now rests comfortably in the arms of her Lord and Savior after a lifetime of amazing accomplishments and exciting experiences.

She is survived in this life by her husband, Robert Elliott Button whom she married on June 5, 1965; their daughter, Catherine Day Button Campe of Charlotte, NC and her children: Camden Rose Campe and Lawson David Campe; her son, Robert Justus Button, his wife Kristi Harter Button of Fayetteville, AR and their children, Connor Justus Button and Riley Edward Button. Her extended family includes her sister and brother-in-law, Dale and Thomas Strickler of Snow Creek, Laura Button Cain, Andy & Janet Button, and Jerry & Betty Button Yingling, as well as numerous Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nieces and Nephews.

A graduate of Franklin County High School, Class of 1960, she attended Radford University for one year before entering the Richmond Memorial Nursing School as a member of its inaugural class. She met Bob, a student at nearby Union Theological Seminary, at a nursing school fund raiser carwash. In 1964 she completed her training and became an RN. During her career she worked in the emergency room at Oakland County Hospital in Oakland, MD, the Kidney Transplant Unit at Medical College of Virginia, school nursing in Hawkins County, TN, med-surg at Holston Valley Community Hospital in Kingsport, TN, and completed her nursing career as a Diabetes Educator at Wesley Long and Moses Cone hospitals in Greensboro, NC. She was the first director of the Diabetes Treatment Center in Greensboro and made a significant impact in the Diabetes Education and treatment world. She served the NC Chapter of the American Diabetes Association and served as its President in 1983.

In the midst of this career, she had two wonderful children, completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, sang in the Greensboro Choral Society and was a member of Guilford Park Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir and served as an Elder.

As the wife of a Presbyterian minister and a person of faith in her own right, , she was always vitally involved in the churches where her husband pastored, most recently Forest Hills Presbyterian Church in Martinsville, VA, where she served as an Elder, member of the Congregational Care Team and sang in the choir. In addition she was a dedicated volunteer at Grace Network and Safety Net in Martinsville.

She loved to travel. She and her husband visited Canada, Guatemala, Colombia, England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France and most recently Italy. She also enjoyed cruises and trips to the beach, especially Edisto Island. After 32 years of residency in Greensboro, NC, she and her husband moved to the Hurd Family Farm in Snow Creek, VA where they built their retirement home on a hill overlooking the Creek. For the past twelve years she has enjoyed living in the country, walking in the woods, watching the birds feed, the squirrels play, the deer eat her hostas and even an occasional bear looking in her window and carrying off her bird feeder. A member of the Virginia Tech Master Gardner program, she enjoyed assisting others who had questions about their gardens.

Elaine was always an independent thinker who read vociferously. Even after moving to Snow Creek, she maintained her membership in her book club in Greensboro where every month she and her friends met to discuss their latest literary pick. She made friends easily and maintained those relationships for life. She was creative, dabbling in pottery and knitting. She had a strong sense of justice, sharing her beliefs with others. She loved The Lord and His Church and was His good and faithful servant.

Elaine was a wonderful mother, encouraging her children in Scouts, dance, soccer, church youth group, pom-pom squad, theatre and countless other activities. Modeling her faith by serving others in all that she did was just who she was. As adults, her children enjoyed both reminiscing and making new memories with her: making music, cooking, gardening, playing spoons or “Up the River/Down the River” and spending time with her children, grandchildren and extended family. She loved her grandchildren dearly and enjoyed every moment spent with them, always discovering her unique connection with each grandchild. She and her sister were devoted daughters to their mother in her older years. Nothing was more important to her in this life than her family.

A memorial service and witness to The Resurrection will take place at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, 725 Beechnut Lane, Martinsville, VA 24112, on March 16, 2019 at 2:00pm. Visitation with the family will precede the service at 12:30.

In lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to the Forest Hills Music Fund, and/or Grace Network, P.O. Box 3902, Martinsville, VA 24112. The burial will be private at Snow Creek Christian Church cemetery.

Norris Funeral Services, Inc. and Crematory, Martinsville, VA is serving the Button family.
