Obituary for Aubrey Henderson

Aubrey Henderson (also known as Candy Man and Bingo Man at Roman Eagle), 96, of Danville, VA, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2019, at his residence.

Mr. Henderson was born on May 14, 1923 in Fountain Inn, SC to the late Nellie Henderson and the late Carl Henderson. He was married to Adell Huff Henderson, who predeceased him on July 17, 2006. Aubrey was a member of Spring Garden Community Church. Those who knew Aubrey knew they had a friend for life.

Aubrey served in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the security team for President Roosevelt during WW II. He was also assigned as the personal bodyguard to General Mark W. Clark. In 1949 he reenlisted and served as an instructor at West Point Military Academy for two years. Later both Aubrey and his brother, Robert C. Henderson, both received top secret clearances and participated in the testing of the atomic bomb in the Pacific.

Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Henderson and Cindy H. Barber, both of Danville and a brother, Rev. Curtis Henderson of Hixson, TN, as well as a grandson, Joshua Barber, and two great-grandchildren, Briana and Haley Barber. In additional to his parents and wife, Aubrey was predeceased by four sisters and three brothers, Faye Collins, Inez Richardson, Betty Lou Luffman, Helen Sandridge, Robert C. Henderson, Ray Henderson and Douglas Henderson.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Norris Funeral Services, Mt. Hermon Chapel with the Rev. Clark Crowder and the Rev. Curtis Henderson officiating. The family will visit with friends on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 from 6:00–7:30 PM at the funeral home at 3995 Franklin Turnpike, Danville and at other times at the home of his daughter, Cindy, at 120 Old Piney Forest Rd, Lot #83, Danville.

The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Spring Garden Community Church, Chatham, VA.
