Obituary for Sallie Witt Mays

Sallie Margaret Witt Mays, 95, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at Guggenheimer Health and Rehabilitation Center, Lynchburg.

Mrs. Mays was born May 15, 1923 at the family home in Lowesville. She was the daughter of the late John Witt and Virginia “Jenni Wren” Whitehead Witt, and wife of the late Jerry Thomas “J.T.” Mays, Jr.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Wanda Gay Mays Blelloch; her daughter-in-law, Rebecca Dale Wood Mays; and three brothers: Cephas, Brent, and John Witt.

Mrs. Mays is survived by her son, Dwight Lyddane Mays and wife, Deborah of Elon and her son-in-law, John W. Blelloch, III of Hampton. She was “Na Na” to her grandchildren, and leaves to cherish her memory her grandsons: Christopher McKay Blelloch and wife, Heather of Warrenton, and Joshua Thomas Mays and wife, Kelly of Elon; her great-grandchildren: Nolan and Morgan Blelloch and Kylie and Kinley Mays; and her sisters-in-law: Loree Bradley Mays, Eva Jane Wood Mays, Magdalene Cash Mays and Frances Witt Swisher.

Growing up in Amherst County, Sallie was reared by a devoted and loving uncle, the late Ford Whitehead, who was known as “Third” to the family. She was a member of Central Baptist Church and graduated from Temperance High School. After moving from Lowesville, Sallie became a member of Corner Stone Baptist Church in Naola. As a wife, mother and homemaker, she always loved and wanted the best for all her family. Mrs. Mays retired from Central Virginia Training School and Hospital.

The Mays family wishes to extend their appreciation and love to Sallie’s friend and caring neighbor, Linda Ann Massie. And to the many caretakers, both medical and family, a special “Thank You” for the comfort and love always shown throughout her lifetime.

A celebration and service for the life of Sallie Mays will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday, August 24, 2018 at Driskill Funeral Chapel, Amherst with Rev. Peyton Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow in Amherst Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 pm, Friday at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Deborah Mays, 141 Hunt Club Drive, Madison Heights, VA 24572 (Elon).
