Obituary for SFC Martin L. Hamilton

SFC Martin L. Hamilton, 94, of Cumberland, Va., passed away April 14, 2017, at the Envoy at the Village in Fork Union, Va. He was born July 14, 1922, in McCall S.C. to the late Blanche Gore Hamilton and the late Farley Hamilton. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Irene Dickens Hamilton.

Mr. Hamilton proudly served his country with the U.S. Army 3rd Division during WWII, participating in the landing at Anzio, Italy and the landing in Southern France. His company personally liberated three concentration camps in their march across Germany. He later served in Korea, where he was severely wounded by shrapnel. Mr. Hamilton retired from the Army in 1966 following 24 years of service, and later moved to Cumberland Co., Va., where he operated Booker’s Restaurant for several years, then Booker’s Country Store until his retirement.

After retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Mr. Hamilton was a devoted fan of the Washington Redskins; he never missed a game. He always had pets over the years, which he dearly loved. Mr. Hamilton always enjoyed family gatherings at his house.

He is survived by nephew, Robert Hamilton, Jr. (Tina); niece, Betty Leachman; special great niece, Karen Patterson; and special great nephew, Troy Patterson (Kim); as well as special friends in Cumberland, John and Wanda Sullivan, and Matt and Bobbie Bernard.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Hamilton was predeceased by his brothers, Tommy, Robert & Jimmy Hamilton; sister, Margaret Morgan.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at Highland Burial Park with Rev. Freddie Vicks officiating and military honors provided by American Legion Dan River Post 1097.
