Obituary for Mary Grace Shimp

Mary Grace Shimp, 94, of Amherst, passed away at home on Wednesday, September 27, 2017. Mary was born on December 22, 1922, in Syracuse, NY. She was the daughter of the late Mary Deane Armstrong and James Armstrong.
A devoted Catholic all her life, Mary graduated from Cathedral High School in Syracuse, N.Y. She was office manager for Carman’s Hardware in Syracuse prior to her marriage to Luther Shimp. They farmed together near South Onondaga, NY and sold eggs, poultry, and produce in Syracuse for years, and later she was the secretary for Dad’s Farm Family Insurance business. She was a long-time member of Corpus Christi Church in South Onondaga, NY, and later of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Amherst, VA. Mary was a loving and selfless woman who remains an inspiration to her family. She took into her home and cared for many foster children and adults, “fresh air” children, AFS foreign students, as well as numerous aged relatives. When she and Luther moved to Virginia 20 years ago, she volunteered in local literacy programs into her 80’s.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband Luther, her sister Marjorie Warner, and her grandson Scott C Shimp. She is survived by her sons Jim Shimp (Nancy), Ernie Shimp (Anita), John Shimp (Susie), daughter Mary Lu Gregg (Stan), two sisters, Rita Costello and Anne Armstrong. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
A special thank you to Jackie Dawson who has been such a caring friend and neighbor to Mom during her years in Amherst. Thank you also to the care givers and nurses from Generation Solutions for their wonderful help and companionship.
Funeral services will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Amherst on Tuesday, October 3 at 2 PM.
