Obituary for Mark Steven Gatewood

The family of Mark Steven Gatewood are so very saddened by his illness and passing on August 8, 2018.

Mark was born January 24, 1964 in Danville, VA to W.T. and Joyce Gatewood. He graduated from Tunstall High School and received a degree in Drafting and Design from Danville Community College. After graduation, he worked at Newport News Shipyard as a Draftsman. In the fall of 1986, Mark became Manager of the Warehouse for J.D. Yeatts and Son. Later, he became Vice-President of Sales and Co-owner.

Mark grew up attending Woodlawn Baptist Church with his parents. After marrying Melissa, they attended Hopewell United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Redmen Poquoson Tribe #124.

Mark will be remembered as a loving son, husband, father and Pa. He was a kind and generous friend as well as a well-respected businessman. He had traveled extensively in his job and met many friends all over the United States and Asia. Mark was known to be one of the most hard-working men you would meet but he made time for wonderful trips and special time with his family. He loved biking, scuba diving, tennis and running. We sometimes thought he was the energizer bunny.

Mark leaves behind his parents, Tommy and Joyce Gatewood, his loving wife of 34 years, Melissa Yeatts Gatewood, his son, Nicholas Gatewood and wife Rebecca, his daughter, Stephanie Gatewood Brande and his daughter, Alexandra Gatewood Burkhalter and husband Alan. He sadly leaves his “Peanut”, grandson Mason Brande. Mark is survived by two brothers, Gary Gatewood and wife Carolyn, Randy Gatewood and wife Kim. His special furry friend, Pepper, will miss him each and every day. His many nieces, nephews and in-laws all grieve his passing.

Mark was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Witcher & Violet Oakes, paternal grandparents, Thomas & Ina Gatewood, nieces, Rebecca Phillips and Rachel Gatewood and nephew Phillip Wright.

Services will be held 4:00 PM, Sunday, August 12, 2018 at Woodlawn Baptist Church, 2500 Westover Dr., Danville, VA 24541 with Rev. Linwood Cook and Pastor Ronnie Tote presiding. Burial will be at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends on Saturday evening, August 11th, from 6 to 8 PM at Woodlawn Baptist Church and other times they will be at the residence, 3160 Stony Mill Road, Danville, VA.

Norris Funeral Services, Inc. and Crematory, West End Chapel, 511 Church Ave. Danville is serving the Gatewood family. Online condolences may be made at
