Obituary for John Witten Tunnell

John Witten Tunnell, 39, of Martinsville, VA passed away July 26, 2017. He is preceded in death by his mother, Peggy Bowman Tunnell and his grandfather (Papa) Andrew Witten Tunnell. He is survived by his father, Andrew William (Andy) (Bill) Tunnell and Brenda Edmondson, Fincastle, VA; sisters, Beth Tourville and husband, Todd of Greensboro, NC and Lori McElroy and husband Greg of Winter Heaven, FL; brother, Andrew Tunnell, II and wife Nikea of Martinsville, VA; grandmother, Mary Tunnell of Troutville, VA; aunt Sandra Tunnell and husband Rick of Troutville, VA; and other aunts, uncles, cousins, and relatives from Danville, Roanoke, Alabama, North Carolina, and Missouri.

John was a fun loving, spirited individual that never met a stranger. He loved watching racing (Indy car) Earnhart, Jr., soccer, basketball, and football (Dallas Cowboys and VA Tech). He played baseball, basketball, and soccer at Carlisle School. He moved to Magna Vista where he played football and soccer before graduating in 1996. He attended P.H.C.C. for several years.

After school he worked at several different businesses in Danville, High Point, NC and Martinsville before finally working in the E.R. department at Memorial Hospital Martinsville and Henry County. He was a dedicated and helpful employee to patients, families, and others. He was recognized as employee of the month several times.

After an automobile accident that left him confined to a wheel chair, he recovered to participate in the wheel chair special Olympic events and teams. He completed the Wounded Warrior bike event from Greensboro, NC to Myrtle Beach, SC. He also touched many individuals and inspired them with his spirit energy and effort that brought him through life.

He will be sadly missed by family, friends, classmates, and teammates. He attended Hillcrest Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Breast Cancer Foundation or the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, or the Wounded Warrior Project.

Pastor Tim Harville will conduct the memorial service. Visitation with the family will be August 5, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the service will be at 1 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 18075 A.L. Philpott Hwy., Ridgeway, VA 24148, 58 West, exit off of 220 by-pass.
