Obituary for James Nolen Byrd

James Nolen Byrd, 85, of the Dyer Store Community died May 16, 2017. Nolen and his wife Joann Byrd were owners of the landmark Byrd's Store in Axton, VA until they retired and sold the business in 1996. He was born in Mooresville, NC on April 30, 1932, son of the late James Edward Byrd and Virginia Catherine (Byrd) Bell. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Joann Hill Byrd; grandson, James Phillip Byrd; grandmother, Ruth McBride; and step-mother, Nina T. Byrd.

Nolen is survived by: sons, James Dickie Byrd and Billy Camden Byrd - wife Sheri of Figsboro, Michael Jay Byrd - wife Denise of Dyer Store, and Kenneth Nolen Byrd - wife Jackie of Ridgeway; daughters, Robin Dee Byrd of Collinsville and Vickie Lee Byrd of Eden, NC; honorary son, Ronnie Jones - wife Lori of Dyer Store; grandchildren, Joshua Steven Byrd, James Camden Byrd, Carson Haze Byrd, Lisa Byrd Herndon, Stephen Nolen Byrd, and Brianna Byrd Fulp; great-grandchildren, James Alexander Byrd, Sierra Watson Cockran, Cole Forsyth Watson; half-sister, Bonnie Byrd Jefferson; and cousins, Wayne Byrd - wife Carolyn, Oren Byrd, Peggy Billings, and Norma Jean Billings Favaron.

Nolen graduated from Axton High School in 1951. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1954 and was stationed in Brunswick, GA. When he returned to Henry County, he worked at Burroughs White Chevrolet and Roy Stone Trucking before taking over the family business at Byrd's Store in Axton. After retiring, he spent most of his time cat fishing, rabbit hunting, and sitting under the "Tree of Knowledge". He was a member of the Martinsville Elks Lodge #1752, the Eagles Club, and the Martinsville Amvets and attended Granberry United Methodist Church.

A visitation will be held Thursday, May 18th from 6:00- 8:00 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services Martinsville Chapel and other times at the home of Jay and Denise Byrd at 3485 Dyer Store Road, Martinsville. The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 19th at 1:00 p.m. also at Norris Funeral Services. Burial will follow the service at Roselawn Burial Park.
