Obituary for James Garland Wood

Mr. James Garland Wood, 95, of Danville, Va. went home to join his loving wife of 69 years, Catherine Dix Wood and his Lord on Monday, May 7, 2018, from Roman Eagle in Danville, Va.

Born February 17, 1923, in Caswell County, N.C., he was son of the late Otis and Elizabeth Johnson Wood. Also preceding his passing, were one brother, O.D. “Darryl” Wood, formerly of Roanoke; sisters, Mary Wood Spoonhower of San Diego, Berkley Wood Taylor of Danville, Anna Lisa Wood Thurston of Suffolk, and Stella Wood Evans of New Jersey; and great-grandson, Parker Jay Michael “PJ” Armstrong.

His surviving family includes his daughters, Cathy Wood Moore, husband David of Elon, N.C., Debra Wood Hammock, husband Danny of Vinton, Va., and Clare Wood Loftis, husband Mike of Danville; grandsons, James Addison “Jason” Moore, wife Sara of Anderson, S.C. and Dustin Ryan Moore and fiancée, Cara Menzel of Burlington, N.C.; granddaughters, Michelle Lee Joyce, husband Billy of Madison, N.C. and Jennifer Loftis Armstrong, husband Chris of Danville; great-grandsons Ryan Christopher Armstrong of Danville and Jaxson Alexander Moore of Anderson, S.C.; and sister, Rachel Wood Friedman of Las Vegas, Nevada.

The family would like to extend a loving thank you to our dad’s loving friend, “Casey” and caregiver, Bruni Scarce.

Other than being a loving father to his children, grand and great, Mr. Wood was known well as “JG” or “Woody” to his friends. He retired from many aspects of life: Southwestern Life Ins., proprietor of Green Acres Grill, manager of Mt. Cross County Baseball League, and golfer for many years of his life. He served his country in WWII 1942-1945 as Darby Ranger 4th Battalion in Company D, FSSF, 474th Infantry Regiment, receiving replica of the Congressional Gold Medal, Liberating Rome and Norway, being a survivor of Anzio Beachhead. He served 29 months in Europe, being one of two survivors of 50 volunteers to return home to the United States. Mr. Wood was a member of Shermont Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2018, at Norris Mt. Hermon Chapel, with Rev. Rick Lancaster officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2018, at the funeral home prior to the service.

Following the service, those who wish, may gather at the residence of Clare Loftis.
