Obituary for Harry Lee Wright

Harry Lee Wright, age 92, of 905 Jones Mill Road, Chatham, Virginia went to his Heavenly Home on January 9, 2018, at Salem VA Medical Center. Born in Danville, Virginia, he was the son of the late Howard and Martha Barrett Wright and foster son of the late Virgil and Myrtle P. Hardy. He served in the United States Armed Forces in World War II in the European Theater of Operations, receiving the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the EAME Campaign Medal with Bronze Star. Harry was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.

On October 17, 1947, he married the love of his life, Mary Jones Wright. Harry worked in the furniture business prior to his employment at Dan River Mills, Inc. for 21 years. He served as Plant Supervisor before his disability retirement in 1975. He was an active member of Hopewell United Methodist Church, serving as Lay Leader for many years and in other official capacities. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World Lodge 15, where he served in various offices.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 70 years; two sons, Sherrille L. Wright (Dianne) of Lynchburg, and Vaden L. Wright (Emily) of Chatham; one daughter, Jana W. Smith of Florida; one son-in-law, Lance Adams of Danville; seven grandchildren: Kevin L. Wright (Lori), Kristin W. McKillip (Ryan), Jonathan L. Wright (Lauren), Kelsey Duncan (Brett), Dakota Smith, Destiny Smith, and Dazmen Smith; five step-grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Hope W. Adams; two foster brothers, Hermon Hardy and Wesley Hardy; and a foster sister, Celesture W. Thomas.

A Celebration of Life in his honor will be held at Hopewell United Methodist Church, Dry Fork, Virginia on Thursday, January 11 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at the church cemetery with full military rites.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 11, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the church prior to the service, and at other times at the residence of Mary Wright, 905 Jones Mill Road, Chatham, VA.
