Obituary for Glenda Faye Pulliam

Glenda was born in Martinsville, VA on September 19, 1939 and died in Roanoke County, VA on November 18, 2017. Her parents, Paul and Edna, her sister, Beth Wilbourne, and her brother-in-law, Tom Clark, predeceased her. She is survived by her sisters, Bonnie Pulliam and Cathy Clark, and her nephew, Christopher Clark.

Glenda filled her 78 years with many enriching experiences. She made lifelong friends at Mary Washington and Lynchburg College. With her outgoing personality she continued to make friends throughout her teaching career in Tidewater, VA and during her retirement. She had a passion for visiting new places and often reminisced about people she encountered and experiences she had while traveling abroad. Glenda also enjoyed traveling stateside, with San Francisco, the Maine Coast, and the Outer Banks of NC being some of her favorite spots.

Glenda enjoyed cooking, but she enjoyed eating food as much as she enjoyed preparing it, especially when she could do so in the company of friends. She liked trying new restaurants, and she felt an evening spent in good conversation complemented by good food was an evening well spent.

Glenda loved being outdoors and appreciated nature. She believed the environment needed protection and supporting the Chesapeake Bay Foundation was her way of doing so.

Although Glenda graduated from Lynchburg College it was UVA all the way when it came to collegiate sports. UVA’s basketball team brought her a lot of joy (and sometimes pain, especially when they lost a close one)! She was an ardent fan of Tony Bennett, having a bit of a crush on him, and she wanted to see him coach the team to an NCAA championship.

Glenda reserved a special place in her heart for animals, particularly the soft, furry kind. Puppies were at the top of her list. She supported the SPCA of Martinsville-Henry County, and years ago she was responsible for placing a dog in need of a new home with her sister, Bonnie, who was in need of a loyal hiking companion. Bonnie called her new companion, Muffin, and she soon became a cherished member of the family.

For awhile, after she moved to Martinsville, Glenda enjoyed having Mollie, a sweet-natured pug, as a housemate. She and Mollie quickly developed a strong bond with one another. Most recently, Glenda’s days were brightened with visits from Cathy’s dogs, Tucker and Sophie. They were little angels sent to cheer her up.

Glenda was a religious person. She believed in God and accepted His Son, Jesus, as her Savior. Her faith, her friends, and her family sustained her while she battled endometrial cancer. Although she is no longer physically among us, the family takes great comfort in knowing she is now under God’s eternal care, no longer feeling any pain or sorrow. Now her spirit soars!

The family is indebted to Glenda’s friends who so thoughtfully sent cards, offered prayers, and performed other acts of kindness. The family also wishes to thank Good Samaritan Hospice for the care and understanding its staff and volunteers, especially Ann Martyn, provided Glenda, Bonnie, and Cathy during this time.

A funeral service for Glenda will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville Chapel with The Reverend Dr. Dennis Knight officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Ridgeway, VA.
