Obituary for Eugenia Massie Farrar

Mrs. Eugenia Lee Massie Farrar, 99, of Lynchburg, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2018 in Lynchburg General Hospital.

Twice widowed, her first husband was the late Captain Julian Bennett Massie, Jr. (USAF); her later husband was the late Hamilton Pettus Farrar of Lynchburg. She was the daughter of the late James Harden and Sallie Harvey Massie of Amherst County.

Mrs. Farrar was born September 7, 1918 at “Edgewood Farm”, Sandidges, in Amherst County, VA: The ancestral home of her great-grand parents. She was a graduate of Amherst High School, received her B.S. Degree from James Madison University and did graduate work at Lynchburg College. She taught school in Alleghany County and in Amherst County.

Mrs. Farrar belonged to the Lynchburg branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW), served on the Board of Directors of the Woman’s Club of Lynchburg, served as a past Corresponding Secretary of the Amherst Woman’s Club, was past president of the Amherst County Retired Teacher’s Association, past regent of the Amherst Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, and past Woman’s Missionary Union Director of the Piedmont Association.

She loved her church where she was a life member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. For over fifty years she taught classes in the Youth Department and later taught in the Senior Adult Department. She enjoyed singing in the church Worship Choir.

She is survived by one son, David Paul Massie of Lynchburg; one step-daughter, Mrs. Jane F. Rumbaugh of Cleveland, TN; and one brother, Samuel Preston Massie, Sr. of Amherst. She was preceded in death by one son, Tom Bennett Massie; four brothers: James Harden Massie, Jr., Joseph W. Massie Sr., Harvey Taliaferro Massie, Sr. and Walter P. Massie, Sr.; and two sisters: Mrs. Margaret Massie Stevens and Mrs. William J. (Nancy) Dickinson.

The family will receive friends and relatives beginning at 10:00 am Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 205 Sandidges Road, Amherst. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am. Interment will be in Harewood Cemetery, Nelson County.
