Obituary for Curtis Calvin Anderson

US Army CPT (ret.) Curtis Calvin Anderson departed this life on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at his home in Rocky Mount, VA after a battle with cancer. He was born (the first of five children) on December 9, 1940 to the late Joseph Benjamin and Arish Gertrude Anderson in Buckingham County, Virginia

Curtis received his early education in Buckingham at Carter G. Woodson High School in Dillwyn, Virginia. Before his service in the United States Army, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia State College in 1964. His higher educational studies were undertaken at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and Old Dominion University.

Curtis’ military service included USA Quartermaster at Fort Lee, VA; USA Infantry at Fort Benning, GA; 101st Air Borne at Fort Campbell, KY; and 1st Calvary Division in Vietnam where he was decorated with the Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Overseas Bar, and the Bronze Star Medal.

Curtis’ civilian service included 35 years as a public school teacher in Rocky Mount, VA; Danville, VA; Reidsville, NC; and Martinsville, Virginia. He was a member of various organizations. He was also an active member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Martinsville, VA.

Curtis’ greatest passion was his successful ventures with “C.C. Anderson Enterprises.” These ventures included raising agricultural crops, harvesting wood and timber, and raising livestock.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gloria Vickers Anderson; his brother, Joseph; and his sister, Rena Bascomb. He is survived by sisters Carolyn Davis and Louise (Milton) Eldridge, brother’s-in-law, sister’s-in-law, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Curtis leaves four children and two grandchildren who have benefited from the examples he set: daughter, Carla Tyree; son, Curtis, Jr.; son, William; daughter, Vicki (Michael) Donahue; granddaughter, Michaela Tyree; and grandson, Daniel Tyree.

The family would like to thank the compassionate staff at Intrepid Hospice Services and the caring aid and support from friend and neighbor Central Pettie.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville Chapel with Reverend Gene Anderson officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
