Obituary for CMSGT Michael Joyce Mitchell

CMSGT, Michael Joyce Mitchell, US Air Force, Retired, 70, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away on May 10, 2017 at his home after a lengthy illness. He was born in Bassett, Virginia on December 4, 1946 to the late Duell W. and Ilda Joyce Mitchell. He was also preceded in death by an infant brother.

Mike graduated from Bassett High School in 1964 and enlisted in the US Air Force in 1966. He retired in 1988 after serving his country for 23 years. During his military career, he achieved the highest rank for an enlisted airman, Chief Master Sergeant. Mike was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with 3 OLCs (Oak Leaf Clusters), Air Force Commendation Medal with 1 OLC, Distinguished-Presidential Unit Citation, AF Outstanding Unit Award with Valor Device and 4 OLCs, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 6 OLCs, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 OLCs, Air Force Overseas Short Tour Ribbon with 1 OLC, Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon, AF Longevity Service Award Ribbon with 4 OLCs, NCO Professional Military Educ. Grad. Ribbon with 1 OLC, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Air Force Training Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He served numerous tours overseas including two tours in Germany, Thailand, Korea, and Vietnam.

Mike’s final assignment, he was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, where upon his retirement made Las Vegas his home. Following his career, he was employed in Security by Imperial Palace for 10 years. For the last 15 years, Mike managed the U-Store Self Storage facility and lived across the street from the entrance to Nellis Air Force Base, near the love of his life—the Air Force.

Surviving are one brother, Leon Mitchell of Craigsville, Virginia, two sisters and brother-in-laws, Carol & Daniel Adams and Betty Jo & Bill Ray, of Bassett; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Mike leaves behind his long-time, devoted friends, John & Linda Bergman, Tammy Lynn Finley, and Florence Hermanson of Las Vegas.

A graveside service will be held at Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery, at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, with Lee Ashley, Minister, officiating. Full military rites will be provided by The Air Force Honor Guard of Seymour-Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, NC. The family will receive friends from 11:00am to 12:00 noon at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville Chapel prior to the service.
